1/13 – Mombasa Day 2 – Food tour…..or not

Our 2nd day in Mombasa starts off as normal aboard, then at 9:20 we disembark to go search for our tour that we know will not happen!  We had booked a street food tour ages ago through Get Your Guide, but had never heard from the tour provider themselves.  Normally they are really good at contacting you – as Juma had been in contact for months (even with the mix up) – but not so with this tour.  We had tried to contact them but our email was returned undeliverable.  Also reached out to GYG who emailed them as well with no response.  So the hunt is on….and as expected it is fruitless. No one was outside the cruise terminal, and making our way out to where Juma picked us up in the port area didn’t prove any more productive.  We hung out with the other tuk tuk drivers and taxis, rebuffing their efforts to take us places, for about 30 minutes before giving up the hunt and heading back inside the port area to grab the next shuttle into town.  Not unexpected!

While we waited to depart on the shuttle, we contacted GYG, told them about the issue and they began work to refund us our tour payment.  We’ll see how that goes.  Then into town we go, heading to the grocery store with a detour at a pharmacy to get more Doxycycline ($2.17 US for 40 capsules – I mean honestly! Stupid US healthcare prices!).  The grocery store turned out to be a bust – they didn’t have any alcohol there (which was our primary reason for going – Tusker Beer, the local beer) and their snacks were all pricey.  We tried to find a liquor store, but none of the locations on Google Maps were correct, so we retraced our steps – following locals to cross the streets coz these people do not stop for anything – not cross walks, not pedestrians, not nothing!

Successfully making it back to the shuttle stop, out in front of a hotel, we eventually ended up waiting inside and ordering a Tusker Beer there – what the heck!  It was actually quite good and we were bummed we couldn’t buy any more to take back with us.  Even asked at the hotel if we could buy a couple bottles to take away and they said no.  Oh well.  It was worth a shot.

Back on the shuttle we got one final shot of the Tusks as we head back to the ship to spend the rest of the afternoon in glorious Air Conditioning, managing even to get a load of laundry in.  Successful afternoon!

We spent sail away in the gym, then our norm, Living Room, dinner, Living Room.

Then cabin of course for reading and nighty-night.  But before nighty-night, there is a knock on the door and a sweet cabin steward arrives with a big gift bag.  Zippy, our sweet and wonderful Guest Relations pal from Kenya went out today to do errands and just “be at home” and bought us a traditional Maasai with the sweetest note saying we were her favorite guests.  Speechless and teary eyed!  So sweet.  A fabulously lovely end to an already great day.
