2/28 – Sea day – Around the Horn we go

No rest for the weary!  Ok – we aren’t really weary, and when do we rest? Ever?  And well, today we are sailing around Cape Horn….at 6:30am.  So up and at’em early.  A condensed gym workout, quick takeaway coffee from the Lido and we are on the balcony by the time the Captain settles the ship in the Hornos Bay, directly in front of the Hornos Island and Cape Horn.  The bow is open, but we’ve played that game with the glacier the other day – and we ain’t going there again!

We are extremely lucky, as the seas are really calm and there are great views of the island, the lighthouse, chapel and the utility building.  We can also see the Antarctic monument up on a hill.  CD Ed explains all about the people who are stationed here, and how they rotate in and out.

We also got some great views of Deceit island and the Jaws of Deceit, which is the entrance to the Drake.  Just beautiful – and so luck to have smooth seas and view…..

…..until a squall came in and it turned really cold, windy and rainy. Retreat!  But so well worth it.  And because it is so calm the Captain is going to sail through the Hershel, Hermit and Deceit islands – normally we would have to go around, but the sea conditions are just right for this little adventure.

Later we went to the Coffee Chat with Johnathan, the F&B director, who we sailed with on the Westerdam in Japan.  He is still adorable and funny and personable, even if we’ve heard the same stories! Next, the Captain gave a weather presentation, then a German beer buffet (spoiler: no German beer!! Just German food with regular beer for purchase – there is no special beer on this ship – an oddity we can’t figure out and didn’t get a chance to ask Johnathan during the coffee chat), then finally CD Ed’s port talk on the Falkland islands.  Stupid questions included.  Better than the comedian!

Who, BTW, was back for his second show in the evening and was even better than in his first show.  His impressions are excellent – and some of the sounds he can make, just a very entertaining guy and show. Then it was on to bed, because it is another early day tomorrow…but then again, when is it not an early day for us
